THE ARC OF PLATTE COUNTY IS FOR PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, THEIR FAMILIES, PROFESSIONALS, AND INTERESTED CITIZENS. PROGRAMS INCLUDE: RESPITE CARE - THE ARC SPPONSORS RESPITE DAYS/NIGHTS 2-3 TIMES A YEAR. PROJECT GUARDIAN ANGEL- A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE COLUMBUS POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HELP ENSURE THE SAFETY OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES IN THE COMMUNITY WITH A REGISTRY . PALS N PLAY- THE ARC SPONSORS ADOLESCENCE & YOUNG ADULTS WHO VOLUNTEER TO BE A FRIENDSHIP CONNECTION FOR SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN (5-21) WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN A RECREATION PROGRAM. ALSO HAVE A SUMMER CAMP; ONE WEEK IN THE SUMMER. FAMILY SUPPORT- THE ARC SPONSORS TRAINING SEMINARS, PROGRAMS, & SOCIAL ACTIVITIES TO HELP STRENGTHEN, SUPPORT, & INFORM FAMILIES. THE ARC SPONSORED 'PARENTS FOR PARENTS' SUPPORT GROUP MEETS QUARTERLY. PEOPLE FIRST- THE ARC SUPPORTS A LOCAL PEOPLE FIRST CHAPTER, PART OF THE STATE ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION FOR ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. PEOPLE FIRST HELPS MEMBERS LEARN TO SPEAK OUT & GIVE THE CONFIDENCES TO SEE THEMSELVES AS PEOPLE FIRST--THEIR DISABILITIES SECOND. ASSISTANCE- THE ARC PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCE. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE FOR PARENTS, SELF-ADVOCATES, AND THE COMMUNITY IN THE ARC OFFICE. COMMUNITY EDUCATION- THE ARC PROVIDES PUBLIC EDUCATION ON THE CONTRIBUTIONS & NEEDS OF CITIZENS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. THE ARC PROMOTES COMMUNITY AWARENESS ON THE PREVENTABLE CAUSES OF DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES SUCH AS FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME & SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT- THE ARC COLLABORATES & COOPERATES WITH ORGANIZATIONS & INDIVIDUALS WORKING FOR 'INCLUSION' IN EDUCATION, RECREATION, EMPLOYMENT, & QUALITY HOUSING.
